Not sure of the next novel by your favorite author or the order of books a series? Do you need a book discussion guide for your book club or a critical review for a book talk? NoveList can help you find the answers to these questions and more. Novelist is a database of over 125,000 fiction titles, reviews, author read-alikes, book discussion guides, annotated book lists, and resources for educators for use in booktalks and for teaching with fiction.
To access NoveList:
- Go to the library's web site at www.ecpubliclibrary.info
- Click on Research, then Novelist under the General Research section.
- The NoveList home page gives you various tabbed headings to navigate around the database: Search Our Database, Browse Lists, Readers' Advisory, and School Resources.
Search Our Database:
- You can search five different ways doing a database search: Find a Favorite Author, Find a Favorite Title, Find a Series Name, Describe a Plot, Guided Boolean Search, and Article and List Search.
- When using an Author, Title, Series, Plot or Boolean search, you are able to set limiters related to age level, number of pages, Lexile Rating, publication date, and format.
- Article and List Search contains full-text articles searchable by name, genre, etc.
Browse Lists:
- Under Browse Lists there are links to lists of Best Fiction, Explore Fiction (fiction by genre) and All Authors, Titles, Series Name, and Subjects where you are able to browse alphabetic lists of authors' titles, series, and subjects.
For Readers:
- If you've read everything by your favorite author and don't know what to read next, Author Read-Alikes contains lists of authors who write in a similar manner and in the same genre for any author you enter in the search.
- What We're Reading contains lists of what Reader's Advisory experts, reviewers, and authors are reading.
- Book discussion groups are becoming more and more popular both in libraries and in community organizations or just among groups of friends. Book Discussion Guides, Adult Level and Book Discussion Guides, Young Adult Level offers a list of authors and their books and provides information about the author, a plot summary, questions and answers, and suggested titles for further reading.
- Book Talks, Children's Level and Book Talks, Young Adult Level provide librarians and educators with sample to talks to use to share their enthusiasm of books to children and young adults of all ages.
- Use Annotated Book Lists to find out about books in a given genre or reading level.
Reader's Advisory:
- This section of Novelist provides various resources for librarians and others providing Readers' Advisory services. These include: NoveList Notes, RA-101 Lite: The Revised Training Program for an Introduction to Readers' Advisory, Talking With Readers: A Workbook for Readers Advisors, and Additional Resources for Readers' Advisory Staff.
School Resources:
- School Resources contains a vast amount of information for the educator to use in teaching with fiction, such as Picture Book Extender and Author Biographies for Young Adults.
